The actual storm clips were taken in NW Alabama (Marion and Winston Counties) and the storm was the remnants of the supercell that produced the Yazoo MS tornado. Radar showed weak rotation and the clips were all taken of these weak rotation area.
To the left is a photo taken while storm chasing on May 3, 2009 in north Alabama. The main event during this storm event was a Derecho that moved through southern Miss across central Alabama. There was a small cluster of storms however, that formed out in front of the bow echo as it was coming into Alabama. One of these storms persisted and was put under a Tornado Warning.
I drove from Flowery Branch, Georgia and intercepted this storm shortly after it crossed I-20. This picture and associated video were shot approx 4-5 miles north of downtown Anniston.
The storm was tornado warned and numerous reports from trained spotters had indicated a tornado or funnel cloud. I didn’t see any obvious funnels or tornadoes, but the storm structure was impressive. At one point in the video, I panned up and shot the spiral banding around this mesocyclone.

The video was taken between 3:15-3:30 pm central time.
If you have anything to add about this storm, please leave a comment.
Here is a excerpt (more to follow) from an interview with John Bradshaw, who worked as the TV weatherman with WAAY-31 TV station in Huntsville, Alabama back in the early 1970′s. The interview was conducted by Ken Hughey, Mike Hunsucker and Jim Cavender who were all students at Madison Academy. The interview was conducted in 1974 or 75, after the April 3, 1974 Super Outbreak of tornadoes.
Enjoy a blast from the past…… Note: The audio starts about 15 seconds into the recording….

Storm chase on Mar 28, 2009 in extreme North Alabama (North of Huntsville). Storms firing along the cold front. All the clips in this video were taken with the Creative Vado HD video camera. This camera makes it incredibly easy to shoot scenes at a moments notice, even while driving. I especially like the wider angle perspective as compared to some of the other small HD video cameras, such as the Flip Mino HD.
